On Wednesday, Gordon Central’s 11th grade Warrior Academy members traveled to the Gordon County courthouse where they simulated two mock trial cases as their final project. Chief Magistrate Judge Pat Rasbury presided over the trials. Judge Rasbury gave students insight into how their cases would have been handled and ruled upon in an actual trial, as well as offered more information about how the court system works and operates on a daily basis.

The students have been working throughout the school year to learn legal terms and procedures, courtroom etiquette, how to formulate lines of questioning, and how to write open and closing arguments to cases, public speaking techniques, as well as develop critical thinking skills they would use while researching their cases and need to use throughout the trial process. The students also had the opportunity to sit in on a jury selection and two trials in Superior Court presided over by Judge Suzanne H. Smith and Judge Carey Nelson.

This year’s mock trial project has helped students connect their learning to real life situations, met several community leaders who have enhanced their learning and taught them more about life outside the walls of high school, and provided them with a look into careers in the legal and government fields.
